【超短編アニメ】世界一短い恋愛ドラマ English translation

この動画を見て面白いと思ったので訳してみた。そしたら英語で説明しました

【超短編アニメ】世界一短い恋愛ドラマ

【ちょうたんぺんアニメ】せかいいちみじかいれんあいドラマ
super-short anime/animation: the shortest love/romantic drama in the world

別れる理由・・・?

the reason (for) breaking up*...?

何か間違っている?
Am I making a mistake?**

何も間違ってはいないわ。ただ、恋にとって正しいものは常に正しくないのよ。
You're not making any mistake. With love, the right thing (to do) is not always right.

理不尽な理由だな。
What an irrational reason.

どんなに理不尽な理由であっても、理由がないよりはましじゃない?
No matter how irrational of a reason I have, isn't it better than no reason at all?

どうしても別れるの?
So... we're breaking up?*

ええ、女性専用車両ですもの。
Yes, because this is the women-only train.

超 = ちょう: super, ultra, really, very
短編 = たんぺん: short (story/film)
理不尽 = りふじん: irrational, unreasonable
ないよりはまし = better than nothing, more than none
女性専用車両 = じょせいせんようしゃりょう: women-only carriage (on a train), only for women passengers

* Note that the verb 別れる means "to be divided" or "to separate". They are separating because he's in the wrong train car; that's the joke.

** UPDATE: After being informed by the creator of the video above, I was told that the boy was not saying "are you making a mistake?" but rather "am I making a mistake/did I make some sort of mistake?" so yeah, I apologize for that mistake on my part!

to my joy, I realized that there are books in Japanese that you can borrow from my local library!! I was pretty surprised that my small town library even HAD any books in Japanese to choose from. one of the books I checked out was titled 花まんま and it seems to be a collection of short stories. except since this book doesn't have furigana, i have to use a kanji dictionary to try and read the kanji i don't recognize. i think I did pretty well, though! I was able to read the first page even though it took me two hours to look up most of the kanji. oh well. this is that page. I decided to translate it.

トカビの夜
the night of Tokabi

あの夜、トカビを見た。

that night, I saw Tokabi.

まるで楽しくスキップするように、ぎっしり寄り集まった屋根から屋根へそいつは軽やかに飛び跳ねていた。わずかに欠けた月の下、ヒュウヒュウと奇妙な、けれど楽しげな声をあげながら。

まるでたのしくスキップするように、ぎっしりよりあつまったやねからやねへそいつはかろやかにとびはねていた。わずかにかけたつきのした、ヒュウヒュウときみょうな、けれどたのしげなこえをあげながら。

almost as if happily skipping along, he was lightly hopping from rooftop to rooftop of the houses tightly gathered together, underneath the slightly waned moon, while his strange, but pleasant voice elevated.

私は二階の部屋の窓から息を潜めて、その様子を眺めていた。階下で眠る父や母にも見せてやりたいと思いつつも、その光景から目が離せなかった。

わたしはにかいのへやのまどからいきをひそめて、そのようそをながめていた。かいかでねむるちちやははにもみせてやりたいとおもいつつも、そのこうけいからめがはなせなかった。

from the window of my room on the second floor, I quieted my voice and gazed at the affair. even though I wanted to show it to my mother and father who were sleeping downstairs, my eyes could not part from the scene.

やがて向かいの家の屋根の上で高く飛びあがると、トカビはくるりと宙返りをした。ランニングシャツの腹が秋風を孕んで膨らんだから、やはりそいつは、本当にそこにいるのだと思った。

やがてむかいのいえのやねのうえでたかくとびあがると、トカビはくるりとちゅうがえりをした。ランニングシャツのはらがあきかぜをはらんでふくらんだから、やはりそいつは、ほんとうにそこにいるのだとおもった。

before long, when he leaped high up onto the top of the roof of the opposite house, Tokabi suddenly somersaulted. because the belly of his running shirt became filled with the autumn wind and puffed out, just as I thought, I knew he was really there.

襲ってくる眠気を必死にこらえながら、そいつの楽しげな様子を私は眺め続けた。そして心の中で、祈ったのだ。これが夢ではありませんように。

おそってくるねむけをひっしにこらえながら、そいつのたのしげなようそをわたしはながめつづけた。そしてこころのなかで、いのったのだ。これがゆめではありませんように。

while desperately resisting the sleepiness that attacked me, I continued to gaze at his cheerful appearance. and in my heart, I prayed that this was not a dream.
