匿名希望の東京都在住 【Bravery】 English translation

once upon a time when I was like 13 or something this was the first song in japanese that I ever listened to on a road trip to eastern washington and back. I only remember that the name of the artist looked very intimidating to me at the time: 匿名希望の東京都在住 or tokumei kibou no toukyouto zaijuu (the anonymous hopes of Tokyo residents) which sort of surprises me considering I went on to learn the language only a few months later. oh well. I confuse even myself, you know.

translation notes

* "dareka no segoshi ja nai" literally means "it's not over someone's back" which sounds weird, but i believe they mean that in the context of someone trying to peek over someone's back in a crowd or something, someone blocking your way, etc. this was difficult to translate and again this song is probably not 100% accurate. sorry

** へ is a strange japanese particle which indicates direction, and is commonly translated as "to", e.g. "nihon he ikitai" = "i wanna go to japan", or "gakkou he ikou" = let's go to school. it indicates where you're going basically. so "kimi he" literally means "to you" and sort of suggests that the speaker is literally GOING to "you" or whoever it is in this context.

translation notes

* literally it just means "from your hand connected", but it sounds as if they imply that they were holding hands before. somebody please correct me if i'm wrong

** sometimes Japanese ESL students who don't know a lot of English will commonly mistake an "r" sound for an "l" sound, as they sound similar in Japanese (and they technically have no "l", just an "r") leading to spelling mistakes if they write something in English. i'm pretty sure if she were trying to say the English word "halo" she would be saying it more like ヘイロ and not ハロー. so while the song's title IS "HALO", I think they meant for it to be "HELLO" since it is not uncommon for japanese people to say "harooooo-" when trying to say the english "hello".

トリノコシティ Left-Behind City English translation (+ romaji lyrics)

a song that tons of people have translated, but I wanted to take a shot at it myself. the lyrics are really interesting! it sounds kind of like a song about someone wanting to be independent and do things on their own, but feeling as if they're being left behind in the process and realizing that being isolated ≠ being independent. idk ignore my commentary and enjoy the song.

* she does not mention flowers in this sentence, but the verb (and the sentence before it) implies that the things falling/blowing in the wind are indeed flowers, if that makes any sense. it doesn't but oh well

** this doesn't literally mean "with us two", but she does say "futari", which implies that there are now two people present, as compared to the previous word used, "hitori" which is a counter for only one person.

an amazing artist that I only just came across last year. gosh it was a pain trying to read some of the kanji for the lyrics, haha, but I managed to write all the lyrics down correctly! so here it is I guess.

Samuelle is one of the only Christian Japanese artists i've seen out there. 頑張れサムエルさん！！諦めないでください！

* or, "a quiet voice in my heart said". this is one of those things in Japanese where i understand the feeling but I can't translate it into good english ARRGGHHHH

** this sounds kinda pushy in English, but he says it very politely, and the verb he uses (ataeru/ataete) means to give as a gift or reward.
